YOUNG ADULT ROOM
EAST HAMPTON LIBRARY
East Hampton, NY
After successfully designing the interiors and environmental graphics for the Children’s Reading Room at East Hampton Library, the client requested that SKOLNICK return to design a new Young Adult Room for the Library. SKOLNICK held two full-day workshops with local teens to get their feedback on the look and feel of the space and determine their preferred amenities. Their chosen theme, “Into the Woods,” is a mixture of mid-century modern design influences and references the fields and woodlands of the East End.

A CALMING ATMOSPHERE
Hints of Scandinavian design result from the use of soft forms, light wood tones, and an earthy color palette. Quiet and calming, varied seating areas provide comfortable environments for study gatherings and individual reading.
RESPONSIVE DESIGN
The Librarian’s reference desk anchors the center of the space and allows for immediate visual access to most areas of the room. Moveable tables for study and computer stations are set against a sculptural wood wall with ceiling elements suggestive of a forest. An adjacent lounge includes the Library’s Manga, graphic novels, and magazine collections and is intended for socializing. A painted mural and low bench form a colorful thematic backdrop to the lounge while at the far end of the room, visitors can find the open stacks area.
