CHILDREN’S READING ROOM

EAST HAMPTON LIBRARY
East Hampton, NY

Founded in 1897, the East Hampton Library is one of Long Island’s oldest public libraries and serves as a repository of local historical documents, maps, and objects. The heritage of Long Island’s East End along with the Library’s collections helped to inspire the design of the new Children’s Reading Room. Colorful icons including lighthouses, windmills, and boats evoke a sense of community and pride of place.

EAST END ICONOGRAPHY

The main reading room is flanked by a windmill book display and seating area at one end and a librarian’s desk shaped like a wooden fishing dory at the other. Nautical references continue in the wood flooring design, built-in window seats, and custom map rug that anchors a central lounge seating area. Overhead, rows of custom ‘book-bird’ pendant lights flock like seagulls through heavy wood trusses that replicate those found elsewhere in the building.

Working with SKOLNICK is one of the best decisions we made during our project. The design team developed our already beautiful Library space into an amazing children’s library room. The numerous design features create an atmosphere that prevents children from wanting to leave and causes adults to want to be children again.
