SONY WONDER TECHNOLOGY LAB

New York, NY

For the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, located at Sony Corporation’s Headquarters in New York City, SKOLNICK redesigned four floors of interactive excitement, creating a media environment reflective of the contemporary role of technology in society. The renovation was strategically scheduled over two phases, allowing the Lab to remain open throughout the process. The end result is a visitor experience that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge interactivity with a sleek and dynamic interior architecture of continuous folded forms that reflect technology’s infusion in our lives.

PERSONALIZED INTERACTIONS

At the beginning of the experience, visitors join a digital community by creating profiles that link to FeliCa cards. The cards enable visitors to personalize their interactions, blurring boundaries between virtual and actual worlds as they translate into pulses of colorful light. Whether programming robots, performing virtual surgery or sending manipulated portraits as signals, visitors creatively network through technologies that increasingly connect us.

VIRTUAL/PHYSICAL WORLDS

The Lab’s renovation immerses visitors in a physical version of the digital world. An architectural shell, inserted into the base building, encapsulates a space within a space that recalls the virtual world within our actual one. The fluid curvature of the shell blends ceilings into walls and walls into floors without right angles. Its glossy white finish reflects the brightness and colors of the Lab’s lighting, and allows media displays and other content to visually pop.

During both major redesigns of the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, the team at SKOLNICK really listened to us, worked collaboratively with all of our business groups, and weren’t afraid to explore and experiment with new technologies. The final result was a unique creative, innovative, and fun space that resonated with children and adults alike.
