MEET OUR TEAM: Sybil Lamarque, AIA, Associate
This series will highlight a different SKOLNICK team member each month, offering readers a glimpse into our process, office culture, and the people who make it all possible. Below is an interview with Sybil Lamarque, AIA, Associate, Architectural Designer, and IT Manager.
What is your favorite building of all time?
The question should really be what’s your favorite building per state and country; there are just too many exceptional structures to choose from. However, I am captivated with Gothic Architecture, the skeletal forms of nature and the use of light creates a timeless experience and have influenced countless of buildings we admire today.
What do you love the most about what you do?
Being in the field of architecture, you have the ability to take one’s visions and bring it to reality. We have fun designing buildings aesthetics and spatial experiences, while educating clients, peers and ourselves at times about architectural styles, technologies, and approaches.
What are the challenges facing the field of architecture?
Two of the biggest obstacles architects face today are technology and the lack of knowledge & understanding of architecture and sustainability. With new programs and games that anyone outside of the field of architecture can use, it creates a false sense of architectural design and its process. Sustainability is a key element architecture can no longer afford to ignore. Although major effects are underway and moving architecture in a more sustainable direction, it’s the architect’s responsibility to educate our clients and peers.
What is your favorite SKOLNICK project?
“The Church” in Sag Harbor, New York is a must visit for anyone who hasn’t experience it!
The minimalist approach, and complex process to the design.
I love the openness (flexibility to interchange future spaces)
Its light and airy
The selection of material, and the reuse of materials
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m an avid runner, swimmer, and triathlete. I’m run 7 marathons and 13 half marathons and still counting. This summer I completed my first Olympic distance triathlon and hope to start training for a ½ ironman within the next year. Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment.
